Folk Radio was a public art project in the form of an artist-led radio station conceived by Tom Flanagan, based at X-PO in Kilnaboy, a village in the heart of the Burren community in Co. Clare. The work was commissioned by Clare County Council through the Gaining Ground Public Art Programme 2017-20.
Folk Radio engaged the wider and existing communities active in and around X-PO. This former post office is a site for cultural and community exchange, initiated as a public art project in 2007 by artist Deirdre O’Mahony.
During this two-year project, Flanagan worked with volunteers including historians, artists, musicians, farmers, architects, ecologists, archaeologists and geologists making sound recordings, audio works and programmes exploring the hinterlands of North West Clare.
Folk Radio was broadcast via analogue FM radio on 87.9FM every day from 3-16 February 2020, and simulcast online. Podcasts of the programmes can be accessed here.
On Saturday 8th of February 2020 the public were invited to the X-PO for a live radio broadcast that included lively panel discussions, interviews, live performance and music.
